Walking and cycling
The Livradois Forez is a great area for walking. Walking can be done directly from our gîte and campsite, but the entire park is equipped with many marked walking trails. Along the way you can enjoy the beautiful nature with its diversity of flora and fauna, the beautiful views and beautiful villages. For mountain bikers there are also paths directly in the area. Cycling here is great for the experienced cyclist. In short, it is a cycling and walking paradise here!
You can follow the marked walking trails but there are also several walking trails at your disposal. As well as IGN walking maps of the immediate area. We would like to inform you about the various walks and maybe we can go on a trip together?
On Facebook, we have also created a group: Wandelen in de Livradois Forez Auvergne where we regularly share walking hints and photos with members of the group. For the moment the texts are in Dutch, but the pictures give a good image of the Livradois Forez.
Mountain bikes are for rent in Ambert at Espace VTT No. 1 in Vernet la Varenne and at Centre V.T.T. du Pays d’Ambert. There are maps with routes directly in the vicinity of the gîte/camping, but there is also a folder available with mountain bike routes in the vicinity of Ambert.
Parc Naturel Régional Livradois Forez
This natural park is one of the largest regional nature parks in France. It covers more than 320,000 hectares and the departments of Puy de Dôme and Haute Loire.
The natural park of Livradois-Forez owes its name to the two mountain ranges that adorn the landscape and are separated by the river Dore that crosses the landscape. On the eastern side of that river lies the Monts du Forez, on the western side the Monts du Livradois. The region is characterised by huge spruce forests, high plains and deep valleys. The highest peak of the Livradois Forez is the Pierre sur Haute with a height of 1634 meters that lies in the Monts du Forez. Our cottage and campsite are located in the middle of this park on the mountain range of the Monts du Livradois at an altitude of 1060 meters. The hiking possibilities are endless.
Parc Régional des Volcans
With an area of 395,000 hectares, the Auvergne Regional Natural Park of the Volcanoes is the largest Regional Natural Park in France and perhaps also the best-known park! With one leg in the department of Puy de Dôme and the other in Cantal, this vast area contains four volcanic massifs, namely the chain of Les Puys, the Monts Dore, the Cézallier and the Monts du Cantal, as well as an old granite plateau, namely the Artense. Here you can also enjoy great hiking. You can visit the Puy de Dôme or take a wonderful walk on the Puy de Pariou. Personally, we find the latter a real must for walkers!
